If you are using Windows 10 or newer, you are in good shape, your computer is preinstalled with Microsoft Defender. Microsoft Defender is an antivirus as well as anti spyware, you would not need to purchase a separate antivirus unless you really want to use a specific brand of antivirus.

Let me introduce myself, my name is John Han, I have been working in the Information Technology Industry for more than 20 years, I have used McAfee, Symantec and many other free antiviruses such as Eset, AVG. From my experience Symantec Antivirus was adding quite a bit of workload to my computer, in other words, my computer would have less free resources for other works, for the works that you would need to be doing.

McAfee is my favorite one over all other paid products, I had less problems with it, it just worked and every time I checked whether it received latest antivirus definitions, and to my surprise it always did. Now on the free side, I used AVG quite a bit as well, it worked just fine but one downside was from time to time it wanted me to upgrade to the paid service, and it could get annoying with all those offers that showed up quite a bit.

Now going back to Microsoft Defender, I have never had any issue where it consumed resources where it slowed down my computer and it always received the latest antivirus definitions and lastly it did not have those annoying pop ups that ask you to upgrade or offer other services you would not need, this is completely free or I would say, it really is a part of Windows operating system.

To save you time from reading all the reasons why, let’s get to the point, here are the tips to check:

1. Go to the bottom of the screen, click on the empty space somewhere where there are no icons, right click on it
2. once the menu pops up, click on the Task Manager, then you will see like the Window below
3. Look at the CPU and Memory in the middle on the upper section, that is how much the percentage of CPU and Memory are being used total to run all those software you have on your computer
4. If CPU or Memory is high, or using between 90% and 100% constantly  then that is most likely the cause of the slowness
5. Once you see either CPU or Memory that is high, click on it to sort the software that is listed on the left side, you want to see the software that is using the most of CPU or memory, then that’s the problem that you will need to correct.

How to correct

for example, if you installed a software that is not fully compatible with your computer, that could cause the CPU or memory to be high, then what you need to go to the add/remove program in Control Panel and remove that particular software or program or if the software has gone corrupted, you will need to remove ir uninstall it then reinstall it again or you have too many tabs open in your Chrome browser, then close the tabs you don’t use.
